There are a few government benefit enhancements rolling out this year that could help any financially struggling tenants.

April 2026

  • Old Age Security payments rise by 0.1%, with two more reviews scheduled for July and October based on updated inflation data.

Spring 2026

  • By no later than June, eligible Canadians will receive a one‑time top‑up worth 50% of their 2025-26 Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit, issued under the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit.

July 2026

  • Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit quarterly payments begin, with amounts 25% higher than existing GST benefits.
  • A new benefit year starts, using 2025 tax returns to determine updated amounts.

None of these enhancements will solve any affordability challenges overnight. But for tenants relying on government support, even small increases can give them a bit of financial breathing room – making on-time, full rent payments slightly more achievable.
