Mark Carney and the Liberal Party clinched victory in Canada’s federal election on Monday, April 28.

With Carney already sworn in as Prime Minister, his Cabinet now shifts from celebration to action, focusing on protecting workers, growing the economy, and tackling the housing crisis.

Just days before the election, Rentals.ca released a survey offering some insight into renters’ political views – both in terms of which policies they preferred, and which candidates they planned to vote for.

The top renter-backed policy was national rent control, a signature plank of the NDP platform. Despite the policy’s popularity, only 13% of respondents who supported it planned to vote for the NDP. In fact, larger shares planned to vote Liberal (39%) or Conservative (26%).

This mismatch suggests Carney’s housing plan was compelling enough to resonate with renters, even if his party didn’t claim the most renter-friendly policy on paper.

When asked who they believed would be most effective in dealing with the housing crisis, 37% of renters named Carney, with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre trailing close behind at 34%.

While housing ranked high on the list of concerns for many Canadians, international issues weren’t far behind. Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy, who unseated Poilievre in Carleton, told CBC that many voters were most concerned with “Donald Trump and the tariffs,” and were looking for someone who could shield the country from growing trade tensions with the US.

Whatever drove Canadians to the polls, the outcome is clear. Mark Carney and the Liberals are still in power – and now it’s time to deliver.
